Advent may have be an overwhelming time for me this year, but it is nothing compared to how overwhelming it was for Mary and Joseph.
It is no wonder that stress levels and tempers rise just at the time of year we are preparing to celebrate the greatest birthday that has ever happened. The period of Advent comes some time after many people have had a holiday. Months of working, schooling, and household chores without a break takes its toll on us all eventually. Hopefully by stopping to think about and prepare for Christmas will result in us not loosing site of what the big day is all about. Continue reading
We are family
With my wife away last week I had little time for my theology books. The children needed to be fed, clothes and dishes needed to be washed, bedtime stories needed to be read. It all took my mind off the fact that the DDO was coming to my house at the weekend.
She was coming to see my wife more than me, her involvement and support being crucial to my potential ordination. It was to be an opportunity for my wife to ask her questions, though in our minds we had built it into being an opportunity for the DDO to ‘discern’ our potential ordination as a couple and a family. The truth is out there, even in a quiche!
My wife and I met with some friends at the weekend. They, like us, are looking at ordination so as our children played together so it was no surprise that our conversation often switched between that and our experience as parents. Nor was it surprising that the weight and impact on our families of deciding to answer God’s call into ordination was at the forefront of it all. Continue reading

This past week has seen a trilogy of events occur in quick succession.
It started with a meeting with a potential Spiritual Director. My Vocations Chaplain had recommended that I sought one out. They are people with whom you can explore matters of faith; people to help you wrestle with trying to understand what God is trying to say to you or in reconciling a world view with a Biblical view of life.
